PIANO

Talented pianists from across the world are drawn to UMD to study with our piano faculty. The piano division is a highly competitive and selective program offering degrees in solo and collaborative piano.

The Program

The piano division offers a vast array of learning and performance opportunities that challenge our students to bring out their best. In addition to weekly studio classes, our students benefit from masterclasses with renowned visiting artists. Recent artists have included Gilbert Kalish, Boris Berman, Richard Goode, Joseph Kalichstein and Julian Martin.

Pianists have a strong presence within the School of Music. All of our piano students have opportunities to collaborate with their peers studying voice, strings and winds. These opportunities include collaborative work in chamber music, larger ensembles and opera rehearsals.

Performance Opportunities

Performance opportunities for piano students abound! These include the Piano Showcase concert, divisional recitals, the annual concerto competition and the School of Music commencement ceremonies.

Collaborative Piano

Offered to graduate students, our collaborative piano program is one of the very finest in the United States. Graduates have made their mark professionally in chamber music, accompanying, opera-coaching and faculty appointments throughout the country and beyond.

Facilities

Our faculty studios and practice rooms are equipped with well-maintained Steinway grand pianos and our school is recognized as an "All-Steinway School" by Steinway & Sons.

The International Piano Archives at Maryland is a unique possession of the university and a one-of-a-kind resource for our piano faculty and students. The largest and most varied archive of piano recordings in the world, it also includes the professional and personal papers of many celebrated pianists and thousands of documents and photos. It is available to scholars throughout the world who often come to do research, as well as to each of our piano students.
