NEW OPERA READING PERFORMANCE
Reading Lolita in Tehran, An opera based on the book by Azar Nafisi
Reading Lolita in Tehran, Azar Nafisi's bestselling book, comes to the stage in this new opera by UMD doctoral student Elisabeth Mehl Greene, with a libretto by the composer and Mitra Motlagh.
Based on Nafisi's experiences secretly teaching Western literature to a group of female students after the Iranian Revolution, the work reveals the grim realities of revolutionary Iran but also illuminates the power of literature to provide universal insights into the human condition.
An audience talk-back with author Dr. Azar Nafisi, opera director Leon Major, and composer Elisabeth Mehl Greene will follow the performance.
Performed in English.
