Congratulations Graduates!

The UM School of Music recognized 109 degree recipients -- 66 graduate students and 43 undergraduates -- at its Spring '07 commencement ceremony held on May 21 in the Clarice Smith Center's Dekelboum Concert Hall. The School's graduating class included 4 PhDs, 18 DMAs, 38 MMs, 6 MAs, 28 BMs, 10 BMEs and 5 BAs. Among Bachelor's degree recipients, 12 students graduated Summa, Magna or cum Laude.

Director of the School of Music Robert Gibson presided over the ceremony, with the presentation of graduates led by associate director Lori DeBoy and professors Robert Provine and Michael Hewitt. Guest speaker Murry Sidlin, Dean of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America, delivered the commencement address. The ceremony featured performances by 19 graduates. Graduating senior Sarah Schramm was recognized with the Sigma Alpha Iota Scholastic Award and rising senior Justin Bland was presented with the 2007-2008 Presser Foundation Scholar award.

The campus's Main Commencement ceremony was held the prior evening, Sunday, May 20 in the Comcast Center where U.S. House Majority Leader and UM alumnus Steny Hoyer delivered the commencement address. Commencement music was provided by School of Music bandleader L. Richmond Sparks and the UM Concert Band, with voice professor Linda Mabbs singing the National Anthem and Alma Mater.
