Alumna Nicole Cherry (B.M. in violin, '93) was honored as a member of the Marian Anderson String Quartet on January 18, 2006, receiving the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Excellence in Arts and Culture from the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) at NYC's Alice Tully Hall. Now an ensemble-in-residence at Texas A&M University, the Quartet became the first African-American ensemble in history to win a classical music competition when it won the International Cleveland Quartet Competition in 1991. At UM, Nicole was a student of Gerald Fischbach.
