The Juilliard School has appointed James Ross, Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Maryland School of Music, to the faculty as an associate to Alan Gilbert, Juilliard's newly named Director of Orchestral Studies. Gilbert, who was appointed Music Director of the New York Philharmonic last year, said that Ross will provide a permanent presence for the Juilliard conducting students.
Ross's exploration of the changing landscape of American orchestras and inclusion of students in the process has elevated the UM School of Music's reputation as a place of innovation. He looks forward to incorporating his work at Juilliard into his life at UM, where he will continue to serve as the Director of Orchestral Activities: "We need to train conductors to be fierce advocates for the kind of fundamental change that will be necessary for classical music to reconnect vitally with our 21st century world."
Robert Gibson, Director of the UM School of Music, has a very positive view of Ross's new affiliation with Juilliard: "I'm delighted to see that Jim's approach to the teaching of conducting and his wonderful work here at Maryland with our orchestra and conducting program have attracted the attention of Maestro Gilbert and The Juilliard School. I am sure that his experience at Juilliard will be a source of further creativity and innovation in his philosophy of teaching, and we look forward to the ways that these experiences will contribute as well to his academic home here at Maryland."
