Honors student and Music major Ashleigh Butler has been selected as the student speaker for the University of Maryland's Fall 2006 Main Commencement. A resident of Parkton, MD (Baltimore County) and a 2002 graduate of Hereford High School, Butler will graduate from UM in December with two degrees: Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance and Bachelor of Music Education. In addition to earning a double-degree during her four and a half years at UM, Butler was also a member of Gemstone, the university's premier research-based honors program for undergraduates. A School of Music scholarship recipient since her freshman year, Butler was selected by Music faculty as the School's 2005-2006 Presser Scholar. This generous one-year award from the Presser Foundation recognizes the academic and artistic excellence of one rising Music senior each year.
As Student Speaker, Butler will join the commencement platform party on stage at the Comcast Center, December 20. Her selection marks the second time in three years that a Music major has been chosen to speak at Main Commencement. In May 2004, Christine Smit, a double major in vocal performance and computer engineering, was named Student Speaker.
Ashleigh Butler is an oboe student of artist Mark Hill, and a music education advisee of Dr. Mike Hewitt.
