LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the University of Maryland School of Music! Here you will find a vibrant community of artists and scholars who balance a commitment to tradition with a willingness to push artistic boundaries and an awareness that the professional arts landscape has changed dramatically in recent decades.

The School of Music boasts an internationally recognized faculty and is housed in The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, which offers stunningly beautiful recital and concert venues for students, faculty and visiting artists alike. Our students draw upon the resources and breadth of academic pursuits offered by a top-tier research university located a short 25-minute metro ride from the heart of the nation’s capital. In fact, many of our undergraduate students pursue double majors in disciplines ranging from the sciences to the humanities, and all of our students are encouraged to explore the manifold connections between music and the wider world.

Our students launch their careers and gain valuable real-world experience by taking full advantage of the professional opportunities and cultural riches offered by the Washington metropolitan area, ranging from plentiful internship opportunities with local cultural institutions like the Smithsonian, to performance opportunities with a plethora of regional orchestras and choruses. In addition to on campus and community performances, the School of Music ensembles perform regularly alongside such elite groups as the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) at the Kennedy Center and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Our ensembles have toured nationally at esteemed venues including Carnegie Hall and internationally as far afield as Belgium and South Korea.

Back on campus, our students benefit from a unique, collaborative relationship between the School of Music and the performing arts presenting arm of the university, the Artist Partner Programs. This partnership brings students into regular contact with renowned visiting artists in the form of masterclasses, career workshops and joint performances. Such interaction is further enriched by School of Music initiatives that place a focus on personal, artistic and professional development through entrepreneurship, community engagement and a commitment to fostering excellence within an environment where diversity of all stripes is celebrated and actively sought. The result is a stimulating and inspirational setting in which to hone one’s artistic craft and scholarly abilities!

Now is an exciting time to be at the School of Music, which is poised to take great leaps forward and to build upon its distinguished legacy and established reputation nationally and around the globe. I invite you to join us and to leave your distinctive mark on this fine institution while receiving the professional tools necessary to live a rich and fulfilling life in the arts.
