UMD SUMMER CHORUS
UMD Summer Chorus is offered to anyone in high school or above who likes to sing—with no audition required! Attendees include potential and current School of Music students, school alumni and members of the community.
For three weeks in June and/or July, UMD Summer Chorus rehearses and performs a major choral work with a professional orchestra and soloists. Led by one or more of the talented graduate students in the choral conducting program, past performances have included Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse, Duruflé’s Requiem and Orff’s Carmina Burana.
In 2019, the UMD Summer Chorus presented an evening of sacred masterworks from the late 18th century led by graduate student conductors Minji Kim and Kathryn Hylton. The concert featured Mozart's expressive psalm settings of the Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, K. 339, and the beloved Mass in B-flat Major (Kleine Orgelmesse/Little Organ Mass) by Haydn.
In 2022, the UMD Summer Chorus, in response to post pandemic rebuilding, hosted a sing-along event of Haydn’s Creation. It was a re-entry into the norms singing as we knew it.
Most recently, Mark Helms and David Mann, two of our talented graduate students, led the Summer Chorus in a program of Handel, Vaughan Williams and Mozart. We are thrilled that participation reflected pre-pandemic norms and excited for the future of this event.
