The University of Maryland School of Music serves as an advocate for the art of music in American culture. In educating the next generation of artist-citizens, the School is fiercely dedicated to the highest standards of artistic and scholarly excellence; diversity in curriculum and programming; robust engagement with our region, nation, and world; entrepreneurial thinking and problem solving; and the creation of an inclusive, open, and welcoming community.

Located minutes from the nation’s capital, the University of Maryland School of Music offers rigorous training alongside the resources and opportunities afforded by one of the country’s top public research universities. In creating the next generation of artist-citizens, we are fiercely dedicated to the highest standards of artistic and scholarly excellence, diversity in curriculum and programming, robust engagement with the world, entrepreneurial thinking and problem solving and the creation of an inclusive, open and welcoming community.

Students are able to take advantage of our internationally active faculty, innovative curriculum and rich cultural environment. The academic programs we offer in music performance, education and scholarship all provide robust training alongside innovative opportunities for personal growth.

Housed within The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, the School of Music offers our students the benefit of working with visiting artists and scholars, including some of the best-known names in the field as well as many emerging thinkers. Visiting artists have included Dawn Upshaw, Gilbert Kalish, Dakha Brakha, Ravi Coltrane, Richard Goode, yMusic, St. Lawrence String Quartet, JACK Quartet and many more every year.

In conjunction with the traditions of our past, the School of Music embraces the ever-changing world in cultivating a new generation of artist citizens who will showcase the power and potential of the performing arts.

The University of Maryland School of Music will strive:

·       To provide an outstanding and active tenure-track and professional-track faculty of performing artists, scholars and teachers who can deliver a robust curriculum and learning environment.

·       To provide remarkable performance venues, rehearsal spaces, classrooms, teaching studios and a performing arts library which combine to create a collaborative working and living laboratory all contained within one building

·       To support a high-research-activity institution as part of the Big Ten where our students and faculty have a host of opportunities for interdisciplinary work and research.

·       To leverage our location within the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) which places us not only within striking distance of two major economic and cultural centers, but also near the heart of some of the nation’s most diverse and economically disparate metropolitan regions.
