Our vast array of summer education opportunities — from youth camps to adult workshops — give members of the community access to our extraordinary School of Music faculty and facilities.
Youth Summer Camps
Terrapin Music Camp
The School of Music’s Terrapin Music Camp (formerly called Summer Youth Music Camp) is a week-long day camp for band, orchestra and choir held at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center for musicians entering grades 5-12. Students receive small group lessons and sectionals taught by outstanding K-12 faculty from the School of Music and throughout the State of Maryland. Each day features performances, elective classes and large ensemble rehearsals for band, orchestra and choir. The week-long camp culminates in a public concert of all participants. Vocalists at any level and musicians with at least one year of study are welcome to join for a week of musical enrichment.
FAME - Foundation for the Advancement of Music & Education
This unique and fun-filled summer program is designed for students seeking careers in the music field or for those who have an interest in exploring music composition, recording, production or singing. Open to students entering grades 7-12, FAME offers music technology and vocal workshops designed to immerse students in vocal technique, cutting-edge software and the intricacies of music composition and production.
High School & Adult Summer Programs
UMD Summer Chorus
UMD Summer Chorus is offered to anyone in high school or above who likes to sing — with no audition required! Attendees include potential and current School of Music students, school alumni and members of the community. For three weeks in June and/or July, UMD Summer Chorus rehearses and performs a major choral work with a professional orchestra and soloists. Led by one or more of the talented graduate students in the choral conducting program, past performances have included Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse, Duruflé’s Requiem and Orff’s Carmina Burana.
Clarinet Academy of America
The Clarinet Academy of America is a collaboration between professors Robert DiLutis of the University of Maryland and D. Ray McClellan of the University of Georgia. This five-day intensive rotates annually between the two universities. The curriculum includes masterclasses, private lessons and chamber music. Workshops include “Reed Making,” “Phrasing,” “How to Become a Master Teacher” and “Audition.” Qualified applicants comprise a select group of high school, college and post-college students, as well as professionals.
