Lars Helgert received a B.M. in classical guitar performance and a B.A. in history from George Washington University and an M.M. in classical guitar performance and a Ph.D. in musicology from Catholic University. His research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American music in a variety of styles, and one of his major interests is the music of immigrants. His work has been published in The Grove Dictionary of American Music, the Journal of the Society for American Music, the American Music Research Center Journal, American Music, the Journal of Musicological Research, the Encyclopedia of Latin American Popular Music and numerous other outlets. He has read papers at the annual meetings of the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, the German Studies Association, the North American Conference on Nineteenth-Century Music, and internationally at conferences in Canada, Italy and New Zealand. Before joining the School of Music at the University of Maryland, he served on the faculties of several other institutions, including Georgetown University, the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and Catholic University’s Rome School of Music. He has performed widely in the Washington, D.C. area as a classical guitar soloist and accompanist, and he is also an experienced freelance writer and editor.
