Appointed Fall 2000

Mike Hewitt is a professor of music education who has been part of the University of Maryland School of Music faculty since 2000.

His research explores how instrumental music students develop self-regulation skills, how performance is assessed and what motivates and prepares music teachers for success. His work has been presented at state, regional and national conferences and published in leading journals such as the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. He has also served on the editorial committees of both journals and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Research in Music Education from 2016 to 2022.

Hewitt is co-author, with Richard Colwell, of The Teaching of Instrumental Music, the sixth edition of which was published in 2024.

A founder and current director of the University of Maryland Terrapin Music Camp, Hewitt oversees a program that engages nearly 500 middle and high school band, orchestra, and choral musicians each year. He has also served the School of Music in multiple leadership roles, including director of undergraduate studies (2005–2013), associate director for academic affairs (2012–2015), and coordinator of music education (2016–2019).

Before joining the Maryland faculty, Hewitt taught instrumental music at the elementary and secondary levels in New York, Michigan and Arizona.
