Mike Hewitt, Professor of Music Education, has been a member of the University of Maryland School of Music faculty since 2000. 

His research on the development of self-regulation skills in instrumental music students, music performance assessment, music teacher education, and music teacher motivation has been presented at national, regional, and state symposia and conferences. He has written articles for publications that include the Journal of Research in Music Education and Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. He has also served on the editorial committees of the JRME & BCRME and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Research in Music Education from 2016-2022.

He is co-author, with Richard Colwell, of The Teaching of Instrumental Music. A sixth edition is expected to be published in 2024. 

Hewitt is a founder and the current director of the University of Maryland Terrapin Music Camp, a day camp that reaches nearly 500 middle and high school band, orchestra, and choral musicians each year. Further, he has served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies (2005-13) the Associate Director for Academic Affairs (2012-15), and Coordinator of Music Education (2016-19) for the School of Music.

Prior to joining the faculty at Maryland, Hewitt taught elementary- and secondary-level instrumental music in New York, Michigan, and Arizona.
