Theodore Guerrant began informal piano lessons with his mother at age three, performed on local Atlanta television at age four and started formal lessons with Regina Pudney of College Park, Georgia, at age five. He began organ lessons at age eleven with his next-door neighbor, Frank Willingham, and, by the time he was a high school senior at Woodward Academy and studying piano with his aunt, Eliza Holmes Feldmann (artist-in-residence at Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia), he was accompanying five choral groups and playing five church services each week.
From there he went on to receive five degrees in music with several scholarships and fellowships: the Bachelor of Music cum laude in piano and the Master of Fine Arts in harpsichord from the University of Georgia in Athens, the Master of Music in piano from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance-literature from the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Graduate Performance Diploma in organ from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He studied piano additionally in Buriton, England, with Denise Lassimonne, and in Washington, D.C., with Evelyn Swarthout Hayes.
Guerrant, in addition to his duties at the University of Maryland, is organist-choirmaster at Christ Episcopal Church Kensington, associate organist at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Derwood, associate conductor-accompanist for the Central Maryland Chorale and accompanist for the Federal City Performing Arts Association and the National Philharmonic Chorale (in residence at the Strathmore Music Center in Rockville). He is a member of several professional organizations including Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, American Guild of Organists, Organ Historical Society, American Matthay Association, Reed Organ Society and the Royal School of Church Music in America.
Guerrant has accompanied choirs across the United States and in Canada, England, Wales and Scandinavia.
