Recent events on our campus and at campuses across the country have raised questions about faculty members' rights and responsibilities regarding academic freedom, First Amendment rights to free speech, and how to engage campus communities in challenging conversations. This workshop invites colleagues in Arts and Humanities to come with questions and concerns about teaching and researching, including in politically and socially charged areas, extramural speech, and other issues related to this topic that have emerged.

How are academic freedom and the right to speech different, and where do they intersect? What are the rights and responsibilities of faculty members and students in campus discussions, classroom debates, and public communication? Please join us for this workshop, where we will explore the best ways to navigate these challenges both in and outside the classroom.

Speakers:

The session will be moderated by Laura Rosenthal, Director for Faculty Leadership.

This event is sponsored by the Committee on Race, Equity and Justice, College of Arts and Humanities.

If you require accommodations, please email the Office of Faculty Affairs at faculty@umd.edu or call 301.405.6803.
