And the Whole Earth Dreams: UMD Wind Ensemble

And the Whole Earth Dreams: UMD Wind Ensemble
ABOUT THE EVENT
Andrea Brown, music director
Teri Bickham, soprano
Jonathan Bisesi, xylophone
The UMD Wind Ensemble is joined by faculty soloists Teri Bickham, soprano, and Jonathan Bisesi, xylophone, for “And the Whole Earth Dreams”.
Inspired by the writings of Louisa May Alcott, Steven Danyew’s Alcott Songs brings together the New England transcendentalist’s poetry with music for wind band in a whimsical work reminiscent of spring. Stories about jumping lily pads, spring flowers and a squirrel and his acorn adventures weave together in a dream-like composition where the melodies and textures mirror the fun and wit of the poems that inspired them.
Vincent Persichetti’s Symphony No. 6 for Band is often regarded as a masterpiece of wind band repertoire. Despite it being a departure from the established concepts of band works at the time, it continues to inspire composers and performers alike, nearly 70 years after its premiere.
This performance also features works by Gala Flagello, Charles Ives and more!
