About the Event

Patron Saint of France Joan of  Arc is known for raising the siege of Orléans and bringing Charles VII of France to be crowned in Reims Cathedral during the Hundred Years' War. Join guest lecturer Kelly DeVries as he presents a lecture on Joan of Arc's story, and why the soldiers of France followed a woman into battle when no troops of the Hundred Years War had done so before. This lecture will include a brief introduction by UMD Professor of Musicology Barbara Haggh-Huglo, who will speak about music in Burgundy and France during the lifetime of Joan of Arc.

Kelly DeVries (Ph.D. in medieval studies, University of Toronto), who specializes in the warfare of the Middle Ages, is often a featured commentator on television documentaries and is the author, co-editor, or editor of numerous publications, including the books: A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology (2001, 2004), The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy 1363-1477 (2005), Fighting Techniques of the Medieval World (2005), The Battle of the Golden Spurs: Courtrai, 11 July 1302 (2001), Infantry Warfare in the Early Fourteenth Century (1996), The Norwegian Invasion of England in 1066 (2003), Medieval Military Technology (2012), and Joan of Arc: A Military Leader (2011). He received, with co-editor Michael Livingston, a 2017 Distinguished Book Award from the Society for Military History for their book The Battle of Crécy: A Casebook (2015). A second Distinguished Book Award from the Society for Military History was shared in 2020 by the two for Medieval Warfare: A Reader (2019).
