Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5: UMD University Orchestra

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5: UMD University Orchestra
ABOUT THE EVENT
Written nearly 10 years after his fourth symphony, Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony came at a time of professional challenge for the composer. At what many would call the height of his career, Tchaikovsky feared that his creative inspirations were waning, and was desperate to prove others, as well as himself, wrong. The result of this anxiety was a symphony rich in theme and melody that, despite Tchaikosvky’s denial of programming, depicts a struggle with—and eventual resignation to—fate. Beautiful lyrical passages give way to an atypical waltz, all leading to the final transformation brought on by the rousing finale.
