Trombonist Myles Blakemore to Join UMD School of Music

Blakemore, a trombonist in the U.S. Navy Band, will lead the trombone studio at UMD.

Trombonist Myles Blakemore will join the UMD School of Music (SOM) as assistant professor of trombone starting this fall. Blakemore will oversee the recruitment of undergraduate and graduate trombone majors, the teaching of applied lessons, brass chamber coaching and will serve as the coordinator of the brass chamber music program. 

Blakemore currently serves in the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. and as lecturer of trombone at Howard University. Prior to these roles, he was a member of the United States Naval Academy Band at Annapolis and held an adjunct position at Morgan State University. Additionally, he was the inaugural Rosemary and David Good Fellow with the Minnesota Orchestra and a fellow with the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida. 

“We are thrilled to welcome Myles Blakemore to our program,” said SOM Director Gregory Miller. “His expertise and passion for teaching are palpable. We are excited to see how his perspective and approach invigorate our program.”

Blakemore has both a national and international profile as a performer with such notable orchestras as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic and other renowned ensembles. As a soloist, he has been a featured artist at the American Trombone Workshop and the International Trombone Festival. His debut solo album “Bach-ish” features works inspired by Bach.

Blakemore received his B.M. from Southern Methodist University and his M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music.
