UMD Concert Choir Celebrates the Season with the BSO and NSO

The University of Maryland Concert Choir, the symphonic choir of the School of Music, took the stage this month with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Marin Alsop performing Mozart’s Requiem.  The Baltimore Sun’s chief music critic, Tim Smith praised their performance saying, “The excellent University of Maryland Concert Choir (finely honed by director Edward Maclary) maintained a supple blend, articulated pristinely and, above all, animated every phrase.”

This December, the Concert Choir will also serve as the chorus for Handel’s Messiah with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for the seventh time.  Since 2003, the group has regularly collaborated with the NSO in repertoire such as the Bach St. Matthew Passion and Mass in B minor, the Haydn Creation and Mendelssohn’s Elias.  The ensemble has appeared under the direction of maestros including Christoph Eschenbach, Helmuth Rilling, Iván Fischer and Matthew Halls.

The group is directed by Dr. Edward Maclary, Professor of Conducting and Director of Choral Activities. Dr. Maclary also serves as Associate Director of the School of Music.
